Battle of Flowers Junior Float 'The Trinity Hillbillies'
Every year junior exhibitors are encouraged to enter their own floats.
This ensures that they gain vital experience so that when they get a
little older they can make significant contributions to the larger floats
Here we see junior members making first tentative moves with the chassis. Junior floats are not usually self-propelled and are often towed by a small tractor. Note that the structure of the cabin is quite regular. This is made more ramshackle by a hefty blow of a hammer to give it a more hillbilly shape.
All the flowering of the junior floats is done by the juniors themselves although there are always plenty of adults around to give advice and demonstartion of techniques. The junior float is ofter flowered in the same shed as the senior float so the youngsters can see close at hand the sort of finish required.
The Battle of Flowers parade itself is a great event for the junior entrants and one which many will remember all their .lives. Competition is just as fierce in the junior classes. The float shown here won three major awards on the day.
See here the very fine flowering work done by these juniors especially considering the crooked lines of the shack. This was a major factor in helping them to win their awards.
Of course it's not only the adults who enjoy dressing up
as you will see below and costumes are another aspect
of the floats which contibute towards the final marks.
